August 21, 2016 Morning Worship
Today, members and regular attendees of Vine Street Baptist Church gathered with somewhat heavy hearts, as they are sad for the passing of Spencer Harmon’s father. But, as Spencer said in a letter that was read to the congregation midway through the service, “We are trusting in the goodness of our sovereign God. The same Father that my dad trusted in throughout his fight with caner is the same God who will sustain us…”
The service began with a reading of Psalm 48:9-14 and prayer said by Deacon Joe Gross. Worship Leader Jacob Hatcher welcomed everyone and lead them in song:
- O How I Love Jesus
- Blessed Be Your Name
Deacon Chandler Bainter was asked to read a letter from Spencer to the congregation. The letter thanked everyone for the prayers and concerns that were sent to him and his family, and expressed how much he feels loved by the Vine Street Baptist family, and how much he loves the congregation.
Chandler introduced today’s guest preacher, Gunner Gunderson, and gave a few general announcements before calling Seth & Emily Carter to the platform. Chandler expressed the church’s thanks and blessings for the time the Carter’s attended, learned and ministered at Vine Street, then said a prayer of blessing on their family as they return to their home church to start a new chapter in their ministerial life. After the prayer, the gathered spent some time in fellowship.
Associate Pastor Brandon Saunders brought everyone back together and said a pastoral prayer over the church, over several church families’ health and spiritual concerns, and for today’s message. Seth Carter returned to the platform to spend a moment thanking everyone for pouring into their lives over the past few years, then read 2 Timothy 3:1-7.
Jaime Hatcher led a few more songs before the offering was gathered.
- Be Still My Soul
- Jesus Paid it All
Deacon Donnie Aebersold said a prayer, then the offering plates were passed while Jaime and Jacob played instrumentally.
Today’s guest preacher, Gunner Gunderson, is best friend and mentor to Senior Pastor Spencer Harmon. Gunner and his wife, Cindi, are from the Tulsa, OK, area, but spent 12 years in Southern California attending college and seminary. They moved to Louisville in 2010 when Gunner started in Southern Seminary’s PhD program. For several years, he was the Director of Student Life at Boyce Bible College, where he first met Spencer and Taylor. Current, he is a professor of Biblical Counseling. Gunner, Cindi and their four children live in Jeffersontown and enjoy being outdoors when they are not otherwise training or participating in cross country running events.
